The Genre of music that will run through my magazine is: Indie

Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s.

The meaning of the term "indie rock" is contested today by many musicians, fans and commentators. Some use the term "indie" to describe independent music defined as any music produced by artists working within the network of independent record labels and underground music venues that emerged in the United States and elsewhere in 1980s and 1990s. The target audience for Indie music is for people of the ages 15-26.

Indie music has several different themes branching off of it. See Below:

This is the final piece of my magazine. It contains information on the sixth form and extracurricular activities which take place in school, just normal things that would be on a school magazine.

Within this magazine there are lots of adverts consisting of a lot of information as you can see on the above. Adverts about the media came up the most on this magazine relating to media based products. Most of the advertisments in the magazine are mainly based at men which is expected as the magazine is aimed at men.

In this issue of the magazine, there are alot of different articles relating to several thngs. The types of articles in this issue are as follows:

  • Interviews

The Take That interview was the main feature within the "Q" magazine. There were different interviews on the inside of this issue, such as:

The Rihanna interview, she talks about Katy Perry's Hen night in Barbados and the events that they got up too. She was also asked several different questions which she
had to answer. Some of the questions were. "Has Lady Gaga raised the stakes for you and other female artists".

The style of this magazine seems to seems to be very plain and clear yet it does not lose the interest of the reader. The magazine does not just appeal to one genre of music but can be generalized to lovers of different types of music. It achieves this by using colors which can appeal to everyone.

The cover

In the early years, the magazine was sub-titled "The modern guide to music and more". Originally it was to be called Cue as in the sense of cueing a record, ready to play,
but the name was changed so that it wouldn't be mistaken for a snooker magazine. The magazine logo is in the top left hand corner of the magazine. The colors are both red and white. These are two very contrasting colours which allow the logo "Q" to stand out amongst everything else on its front cover.

On this issue of "Q" there appears to be no Strapline. The main image of this issue of "Q" magazine is of the Group, "Take That". The facial expressions on the members of the group seem to be that of genuine happiness. On the main image of the magazine, there are different headlines such as, "Back for good?". This headline in particular illustrates why the members of "Take That" seem to smiling as they seem to be coming back from something. The direction of the gaze is focused toward the reader of the magazine with smiling faces showing us they are having fun and that they are happy.

The other i
mages on the front cover of the magazine consist of text such as in formation abo
ut the Q awards inside of them. On the very bottom of the cover, it says "Live Blowout!", after that it gives a list of musicians such as "Arcade Fire, Eminem & Jay-Z, Linkin Park and Beach house & more". These images a
re here to illustrate the content within the magazine and the information for certain topics such the Q Awards.
The colours of the front cover are based on red, white and black, three very contrasting colours. The red and white are used for the logo of the magazine at the top left hand corner. The colour of this logo is very bright and bold, as it is the first thing the reader pays close attention too. The colour of the text on the cover is in bold and is written in black on a white background for it to be readable.

Compared to "Kerrang" magazine, there is not a lot of text written on the cover. Although, the language which is written on the cover consists of clear information about the issue. Because of the bright colours on the magazine due to its logo and text, the readers would be able to identify with the magazine. "Q" as a magazine is which can relate to others and at the same time differ from others. The magazine "NME" has a similar style of layout on the front cover of their magazine. On the other hand, "Kerrang" magazine is different in layout and in colour schemes.

They also do not have as much content on the front cover the magazine as "Kerrang".
The format of the magazine is different to other magazines as it doesn't have as much text on the front cover of its magazine. There is a good balance of content on the front page as it is not too cramped with loads of pictures or with lots of text.

The cover

The design of the block title tells me that the magazine is quite edgy. This is because the title looks like it has been smashed. It has the effect of a smashed glass or mirror which is quite edgy and again alternate.
The title in particular gives me a lot of information about the entire magazine. From the title “Kerrang” I can tell that maybe the magazine has something to do with m
usic because of the evident use of onomatopoeia. The word “Kerrang” sounds like a guitar being strummed and again links back t
o the theme as it is a music magazine. I can also tell what image is trying to be portrayed.
An image of roughness, edginess, and uniqueness is being portrayed in this magazine. And the style of the magazine is very dark but at the same time very vibrant.

The main image is of Hayley Williams the lead singer of a very popular band, "Paramore". She seems to be smiling with her head tilted to one side as she winks directly into the camera. She seems to be looker at the reader as her gaze is focused on the camera. The image in the whole seems quite welcoming, although you can't really see what she is wearing. Her appearances suits that of a typical "Kerrang" read
er. This appeals to its reader as they can identify with Hayley Williams the image on the front cover of the magazine.

On the side of the this issue, there is a vertical banner with 4 different pictures. On the top of the banner is an offer for 4 giant posters. This banner is very clear and big and draws the reader to the magazine as it has that eye catching effect. On the bottom of the magazine is another banner which consists of different bands and artists which will appear in this weeks issue of the Magazine. This has been put on the
magazine to illustrate what will be in the magazine.

In this issue of "Kerrang" the promotion of "Paramore's" private photo album and the
exclusiveness of the magazine draws the buyer into buying this magazine rather than any other magazine such as "Q" or "NME". The offer of the 4 giant posters entices the buyer into buying the magazine to collect these 4 posters. The magazine uses freebies to help entice readers into buying such as posters.magazine. Across the main image of the magazine, there is a strapline which has the writing "Paramore" in bold capital, with pictures of members of the band just below the title "Paramore". This has been put there to show that this is this weeks main focus.

The colours used on the front cover are quite dark, there is a lot of black and the colours reflect the stereotypes of this type of music. Surprisingly I do find the colours attractive but other might not agree. The fonts used are not to complex or fancy but they are all bold and thick which again gives an idea of toughness. The cover of “Kerrang” magazine always has a range of rock sub-genres so that it attracts as many of the audience as possible.

The ways in which the magazine talks to its readers is through the use of well known artists at the front of the cover. Artists such as "Hayley Williams", a well known musician in the world of "Kerrang". This in turn entices the reader to pick up the magazine and want to read it. Many music followers of the ages 15-19 will have posters of musicians on there bedroom walls. "Kerrang" magazine understands that and gives out free posters to its readers to bring them back time and time again.

"Kerrang" magazine does not look like most other magazines. Compared to "Q", "Kerrang's" front cover is much louder and has more to say in terms of content and images. As you can visibly see "Kerrang" has more information about the issue on its front cover than "Q" does. The magazine "Kerrang" is much smaller than that of "NME" or of "Q" in terms of page content and size.

Preliminary task

This is my so far finished piece. I based the school magazine on a sixth form edition consisting of photos of sixth form students. Firstly I followed a strict color scheme consisting of both a golden yellow and and deep sea blue.

I then added a glow on to this text to highlight the text making it clearly visible to its reader. The badge at the side of the title is has been edited. The way in which i had edited it was by making the badge transparent by using the opacity tool. I then also added and outer glow to give that shining affect.

The text added follows the color scheme with the colors yellow and blue. The text has also been made transparent to give it a nice affect.

As you can see i have also added a strip to the bottom of the page which works as a banner at the bottom. It has been made slightly transparent so that the color is not to overpowering on the page.

The picture in its self has not yet been completed as I feel that there is still some work to be done on this photo to make it better than what it is now.

Preliminary Task

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.
